The manufacturing of foil cutting knives requires a delicate balance of hardness and toughness. If the blade is too hard, it becomes brittle and prone to chipping; if it is too soft, it wears out quickly, leading to "burrs" on the foil edge. These burrs can cause catastrophic failures in lithium-ion batteries by piercing the separator and creating internal short circuits.
