Tungsten Carbide composite materials consist of hard carbide grains cemented together by a ductile metal binder (primarily cobalt). By manipulating the grain size of the WC phase (ranging from submicron to ultra-fine grain structures) and adjusting the cobalt content, we can precisely customize the balance between hardness (which provides wear resistance) and toughness (which provides resistance to mechanical shock and chipping).
For applications where ferrous metals are processed at high temperatures, or where chemical stability is required, TiCN-based cermet materials present an exceptional solution. Unlike traditional cemented carbides, cermets offer a highly stable chemical structure with an extremely low affinity for iron. This prevents the formation of a built-up edge (BUE) on the cutter, leading to excellent surface finish results and extending tool life in dry machining environments.
